PADROEIRA DE PORTUGAL A SANTÍSSIMA VIRGEM MARIA, SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO

On this day, March 25th, in 1646, King John IV of Portugal, Solemnly Crowned Our Lady under the image of the Immaculate Conception venerated at Vila Viçosa, Queen and Patroness of Portugal. This took place following a referendum of the Portuguese Empire that took 6 years. This image had been ordered sculpted in stone in England by Saint Nuno in the 15th Century. Since then, all Portuguese Monarchs never again wore the Crown but considered themselves solely representative Lieutenants of the Queen. Later on, in the 19th Century, King D. João VI, founded the Order of Our Lady of Conception of Vila Viçosa in order to recall this historic fact and to award those with outstanding services to the Portuguese Royal House.
